As part of our mission to reduce carbon footprint and build community swapnplay will hosts an annual share/reuse/recycle/cleanup event for not only St Johns and Cathedral Park residents but anyone else in the greater North Portland.

The largest community sharing event in Portland, occurs annually in April. During this daylong event over 5,000 items are exchanged between families at no cost, thousands of items are recycled and workshops are held all day to teach about reducing your ecological footprint. This event is open to the public, free of charge, and 100% volunteer run.

The event is held at Red Sea Church, 7535 N Chicago Ave and N Leonard St.

We begin collecting reusable items on Friday the night before the event from 4pm to 8pm. Swapping of reusable goods and recycling collection happens on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Swapping is done on the honor system, as long as you bring something to contribute you are welcome to swap for other items.

SHARE: A useful goods exchange will take place on Saturday. Making new to you items available based on the honor system:

take what you need, leave what you dont.

We begin accepting reusable items on Friday night from 4-8 and the collection continues all day Saturday.

Suggested items for exchange include:

  • Clothes
  • Media: books, videos, DVDs, VHS
  • Toys
  • Household Items
  • Electronics
  • Furniture
  • Re-Usable Building Materials
  • Plants/Seeds

REUSE: Various reduce and reuse organizations from around Portland are partnering with us adding to this years theme “Elivate ReUse”.

RECYCLE: Collection of hard to recycle items!

Items we are accepting for recycling:

  • Block Styrofoam
  • Packing peanuts
  • Rigid and Soft plastics
  • Metals
  • Tires
  • Electronics (except microwaves)
  • E-Waste: computers,
  • Athletic Shoes
  • Un-usable clothing items (12×12″ minimum)

CLEANUP: The annual Neighborhood Cleanup!

What can I bring for the cleanup?

  • Paint (no gallon or larger paint cans)

*We reserve the right to turn away items not listed if we find we are unable to recycle or dispose of them in a safe manner.

Volunteers Needed:
More than 50 volunteers are needed to make this a successful event!
Shifts are only 2 hours long, and event volunteers have early access to Exchange items.
Lunch is provided, as well as snacks and beverages throughout the day.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Swap Room (inside): Help sort and keep areas organized.

Greeter (outside): Direct people as needed. Tally participants.

Info Table (covered outdoor): Direct people as needed.

Checkout (inside): As people leave, tally how many items go out the door.

Recycling (outside): Direct people dropping off recycling and trash to the appropriate bins/dumpsters

Dish Patrol (inside/outside): 2 dishwashers needed and 1 person running dirty dishes down to the kitchen for the 11-1 and 12:30-2:30 shifts only.

Clean Up (inside/outside): Bag the leftovers, treasure hunt for specific items for local organizations, pack it all on the truck. 3-5 shift only.
